William B. Reichhardt, Esquire

William B. Reichhardt is the principal in the firm of
William B. Reichhardt & Associates in Fairfax, Virginia. He received a
B.A. from the University of Virginia (1971); an M.Ed. degree in counseling
from the University of Virginia (1976) and J.D. from George Mason
University School of Law (1983).
Mr. Reichhardt had early experience as a juvenile
probation officer in Fairfax County (1974-1978). For two years he was the
director of a therapeutic group home and school of special education for
emotionally disturbed adolescent boys (1978-1980). He was then appointed
as the intake supervisor for the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic
Relations District Court (1980-1983). While in this position, he
supervised the court services unit which was responsible for screening and
processing all criminal and domestic relations petitions filed with the
court. Mr. Reichhardt participated in developing a state-wide training
program for intake counselors and he participated in a multi-agency task
group for determining the disposition of child abuse cases investigated by
child protective services.
Mr. Reichhardt was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1983
and began practice as an attorney. He has practiced as a partner in a
large Fairfax firm and in a small specialized law office. He has litigated
at all levels of Virginia state and federal courts. Primary practice areas
include family law, criminal defense, school law, special education and
mental health issues. His trial experience includes criminal and civil
jury trials in cases ranging from first degree murder, other serious
felony charges and misdemeanor appeals, personal injury, breach of
contract and a Federal 1983 action for First Amendment violation. Mr.
Reichhardt has extensive experience in the trials and settlement of cases
involving child custody, support and equitable distribution. At the
appellate level he has successfully argued cases on issues such as child
custody relocation, transfer of juvenile offenders, First Amendment rights
of teachers, malpractice by mental health professionals and adoption. For
many years Mr. Reichhardt has represented a teachers union in Fairfax
County and provided advocacy in administrative and arbitration
proceedings. He has successfully represented children and parents in
special education appeals at the administrative and court appellate
levels. Mr. Reichhardt has an A-V (excellent) rating by Martindale
Hubbell.
He is a member of the Virginia State Bar, The Virginia
Trial Lawyer's Association, The National Association of Criminal Defense
Lawyers and the Fairfax Bar Association. He is a co-author of the Juvenile
Law and Practice Handbook published by the Virginia Law Foundation. He has
lectured extensively on topics related to criminal defense practice in
juvenile court, custody and support issues, equitable distribution and the
law of child abuse and neglect. Mr. Reichhardt was a member of a panel of
speakers chosen to provide required training of Guardians ad Litems for
children in Virginia. In 2001, Mr. Reichhardt received the award as
Pro Bono Attorney of the Year from the Fairfax Bar Association.
In 2009, Mr. Reichhardt was appointed by the governor to serve on the Advisory Committee for Juvenile Justice and is also a sitting member on the Virginia Bar Association Commission on the Needs of Children. In addition, he has been asked by the Virginia State Bar to serve on the faculty providing mandatory professionalism training in Virginia law schools.
